My Mark Matters is a community exercise demonstrating the importance of our individual mark. How we give and receive them. Participants are presented with 50 different surfaces on wooden blocks (i.e. pine cones, clay, fabric etc.) and begin a dialogue about them. They spend time arranging them in sequential order. Chromatic. Soft to rough. Prettiest to ugliest (this one, being very subjective, gets interesting). Each student is asked to choose a block they are most interested in and in measured increments of time (1, 5 and 10 minutes via sand timers) document the surface with graphite pencil in a one inch square. The finished works, ranging in values from dark to light, are placed into a grid (bitmap) image of Planet Earth. The final piece is a community effort and displays the significance of each participant in order to complete the image.
This project is shared and accomplished with every age group and every level of ability, including the blind.
My Mark Matters Planet is completely turnkey. It arrives with everything needed.
